To that end, we continually review our safety and security efforts to maximize customer and employee safety all across our system.

Other News & Information

  • Zero Tolerance for Transit Assaults
City of Edmonton and Edmonton Police Service collaborate to enhance safety on buses and trains.
  • More Assistance at Transit Centres
ETS has initiated a special project to address some of the concerns brought forward by customers, Operators and Amalgamated Transit Union  569 about their perceptions of safety at transit centres.

The project has ETS Special Duty Inspectors assigned to various major transit centres around the city during weekday peak hour service periods. Initially, these Inspectors will be at Mill Woods, Southgate, Northgate and West Edmonton Mall transit centres.

The Special Duty Inspectors are intended to serve as an easily accessible point of contact to assist with the concerns of Operators and ETS customers in a more immediate fashion. They'll provide information on routes and schedules, assist with customer concerns, and be able to resolve many customer service issues on the spot.

Initial feedback from the public and Operators has been very positive. With the identifiable vehicle and uniform, customers have expressed their appreciation at being able to speak with a person who has the authority to take action. Operators have appreciated the readily available assistance provided by the Inspectors.

The project is currently slated to run until the end of June, 2010.

  • ETS Upgrades Control Centre
Recently completed upgrades to the ETS Control Centre make it one of the first in Canada to use an integrated transportation security system for public transit.

The integrated system from Intergraph ® provides ETS Safety and Security personnel in both the Control Centre and patrol vehicles with a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System that improves response times for security related incidents on ETS.

The CAD system allows Control Centre staff to dispatch resources to incidents, view unit status updates, clear units from incidents, and update incident types or locations. The CAD “intelligent” mapping and data entry system seamlessly integrates an interactive, real-time map display with call handling, dispatching, records and information management, remote access, and mobile data. Front-line Officers on the street have remote access to the CAD system with secure access to live information and the ability to search for needed information. The result is a more effective and efficient dispatch of Safety Inspectors and Transit Peace Officers by Control, enhancing both the safety and security of customers using public transit.

“Installation of the Intergraph solutions enables our organization to continue to provide enhanced security, monitoring and transit policing service to the city of Edmonton,” said Ron Gabruck, Director of Safety & Security for Edmonton Transit.

“Every day, transit security personnel around the world rely on Intergraph’s integrated transportation security solutions to provide a common operating picture that facilities effective and efficient response to promote passenger safety’” said John K. Graham, President, Intergraph Security, Government & Infrastructure.  “Intergraph has enjoyed a rich history with the Edmonton Police Service, Edmonton Emergency Response Department and the City of Edmonton.  We are honoured to support the Edmonton Transit System by advancing regional interoperability and providing actionable intelligence where and when it is needed to facilitate effective and efficient response.”

This installation is the first component of the project to upgrade the ETS Control Centre, improving response time and agency coordination for security related incidents on ETS, funded through the Government of Canada Transit-Secure Program.
