Building a Great City One Great Neighbourhood at a Time

City Council's vision for Edmonton supports vibrant neighbourhoods, a culturally rich and welcoming society with a quality physical infrastructure as key factors for quality of life.

Neighbourhood Revitalization is a process, directed by the community and supported by the City, to identify strengths, issues, challenges and the potential of a particular area. People, businesses, and organizations in the area determine their own goals and action plans to build on strengths and improve quality of life.

What Makes a Neighbourhood Great?

There are shops, schools, businesses, parks, places of worship, community organizations and more. People who care about each other, feel safe, support local businesses and take pride in their community.

Edmonton has a wide range of neighbourhoods. In each neighbourhood there are strengths and challenges, and there are opportunities to improve the quality of life.

In some neighbourhoods, the people who live and work in the area may be ready to support the revitalization of the neighbourhood to improve the quality of life for all residents living in the community. Staff from the City of Edmonton's Office of Great Neighbourhoods work in partnership to help citizens, organizations and business owners set goals and achieve results through Neighbourhood Revitalization.

What's Involved?

Connecting people within their neighbourhood. People, businesses and organizations in the area meet with the Office of Great Neighbourhoods Project Manager and agree to participate in a consultation process to determine community goals and action plan. For example, you may want programs for youth, improved signage or to beautify or clean up an area in your neighbourhood.

The Office of Great Neighbourhoods will support and facilitate the process and will coordinate with other City Departments when necessary.

This is a 3 to 5 year commitment. The first phase involves developing action plans, which will later be submitted to City Council for approval and funding.

What Defines Success?

People from the community define success based on their goals and action plan. The Office of Great Neighbourhoods will also monitor a series of indicators that will help track neighbourhood changes as plans are implemented.
